Karachi Electric (KE) is now installing Smart Meter - Definition and Use

A smart meter may look similar to the traditional hydro meter you're used to seeing on homes and other buildings connected to the electrical grid, but its function is quite different. And the added detail that a smart meter tracks affects how you pay for energy.

While a traditional electric hydro meter measures the kilowatt hours (kWhs) consumed for a given period (usually a month or billing cycle) from meter read to meter read or based on historical estimates, a smart meter can record actual hourly consumption. Smart meters are mostly electric, but are also sometimes used for recording the consumption of gas or water by some utilities, because of their detailed recording abilities. For this article, I am referring mostly to electric smart meters, though there may be design similarities in relation to gas or water smart meters.

Smart meters have been installed in many areas, in an effort to reduce electricity demand by making consumers more conscious of when and how they use energy. While consumers need not change anything in their daily routine, if they do not want to when they have a smart meter, energy use during high electricity rate periods will lead to high energy bills. So in order to save money, consumers are encouraged to change their consumption behavior from using electricity in high demand (peak hours), to cheaper off peak or mid-peak times. Not everything we do during peak times can be rescheduled, but some can be.

The key feature of smart meters to hydro utilities is that they can bill customers according to when they use electricity. Time of Use (TOU) electricity rates are generally used with smart meters. They break down a 24-hour period into three time rate schedules - on peak, mid peak and off peak, with the highest being the on peak times and the cheapest - off peak. Off peak times are generally during the overnight period, while on peak and mid peak will vary during the day, based on summer/winter schedules. Specific rates, summer/winter schedules and on, off and mid-peak periods will vary among utilities, as well as provinces or states.

The consumer has no say as to whether they want a smart meter or not; their use is usually mandated by government regulations and rates thus approved. Once you understand the rate-applied time frames, you can reschedule those things that use more power to a cheaper rate period, usually later in the day. Cutting back on peak times will help keep your bills down. Smart meters are designed to work with data collection software that enables consumers to log on to their utility and see their consumption use, which can also inspire them to cut back even more.

Smart meters have digital displays, which are easier to read than the traditional four or five dial meters. The new digital meters are usually read remotely by utility personnel or the data is uploaded using handheld devices, so there's no need for traditional meter readers. This kind of meter reading assures the customer of more accuracy; there's less risk of consumption errors.

Since there are a lot of asset and management costs tied into smart meter programs, customers can usually expect to share in these expenses by way of flat rates or other increases to their hydro bills. Cutting back on electricity use during any rate period will further help overall to keep energy bills down and mitigate these related charges.

What can you do if you have a smart meter tracking your electricity use? Reschedule some tasks for later in the day when time-of-use rates are cheaper. Though you can't possibly delay everything that uses electricity, you may be able to do such tasks as laundry, run the dishwasher or charge tools during mid or off peak times.

Unsure if you have a smart meter on your home? Inquire from your local utility and they can supply additional detail as to time-of-use rates if applicable. They can also help you to learn how to see your consumption online. They can also provide more tips on how to save energy.
